Most of the garage doors in Tempe went up between 1985 and 2007, with the median build year sitting at 1995. A cable that's about to go doesn't usually fail without warning. Look for a door that jerks or hangs unevenly partway through its travel, one side visibly lower than the other when it's open, or a faint popping or scraping sound near the top corners as the door moves. Fraying often shows up first as a few loose wire ends sticking out where the cable loops the bottom bracket.
Once a cable actually snaps, the door will usually stop dead, tilt hard to one side, or drop suddenly if you're mid-cycle when it happens - which in a hot Tempe afternoon is exactly when a stressed, dried-out cable is most likely to let go.
